Trevor's Autism Awareness Month Tip of the Week

Here are 10 things Trevor thinks you should know about Autism:
10 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disorder that affects the functioning of the brain.
9 The disorder is referred to as a "spectrum" because the severity of the symptoms differs by individual.
8 The core symptoms of ASD are: impaired social interaction and communication skills, and obsessive or repetitive routines and interests.
7 It is estimated that 1 in every 150 children in the United States has ASD with a 4:1 male prevalence.
6 Approximately 1.5 million American today are believed to have some from of ASD. With a growth rate of 10-17% per year, that number could rise to 4 million in the next decade.
5 ASD can be reliably diagnosed by age three, although some children are diagnosed earlier.
4 There is currently no cure for ADS, but there is treatment.
3 Multi-disciplinary interventions, (including occupational therapy, speech therapy, music therapy a feeding therapy), are able to address all areas impacted by ASD.
2 Mental health and family support services are often instrumental in helping families cope wit the struggles and triumphs of raising a child with ASD.
1 Early intervention has proved highly successful in lessening the impact of ASD on life and learning.

The Hardest Working 5 Year Old In America!
Trevor is the hardest working 5 year old in America! Heck he is the hardest working person I know of...child or adult. He certainly works harder than his slacker of a mama..LOL Trevor's Autism requires him to work twice, even three times as hard at somethings in order to level the playing field with his "average" peers, and when it comes to something there will always be a disparity between him and other kids his age. Then again Autism has provided him with some rather exceptional gifts as well. Check out this kids schedule...it will make your head spin. Mind you he has been keeping this kind of pace since he was about 2 1/2 years old.

Good God..Could I Give Birth Already!!!
OK..I'm sitting there thinking there is no possible way I can get any bigger...I feel like I'm about to explode!! How in the hell will I get all this baby weight off my body..lol Where the heck did my waist go? Why do my toes look like mini sausages? Is that a second chin I see? When I look in the mirror I don't even see myself..who is that fat pregnant woman?...LMAO
I figured looking at some pictures from this past summer would make me feel better. Make me feel like I will be able to fit my old clothes again, see my waist..heck look cute and not rollie pollie.
Here are a few of the pics I was looking at. I was actually pregnant in these pictures and had picked up a few pounds already, but that body is a far cry from this 39 week pregnant uncomfortable pod I'm presently trapped in.

Say It Loud...I Have Autism & I'm Proud!!!

Mr. Trevor is a snazzy dresser...lol He has tons of cool t-shirts and sweatshirts proclaiming that he has autism and is proud! Autism is a part of who he is...like having beautiful brown eyes. Every morning when he gets dressed, he always looks in the mirror to check out what kind of shirt he is wearing on any given day. It's funny...he will kind of look back at you with this look on his face as if to say thanks for being proud of me for me, and helping me to share who I am with the world.Here is a little glimpse into Trevor's closet..oh yeah, he also has a few shirts letting kids know that his mama is a lawyer and they better not mess with him (now those shirts could get him beat up)...hee hee
Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month!! Autism is the country's fastest growing developmental disability, affecting 1 in 150 children. For those of you who don't know Mr. Trevor has Autism and throughout the month of April he will share with you a few tidbits about Autism. FYI...Trevor is not rain man...LMAO and no he does not sit in a corner rocking and or banging his head against a wall. Autism is a spectrum disorder, which means those who have Autism have various skill levels.
What is autism?
Autism is a neurologically-based developmental disability that affects the way a child’s brain develops and the ability to communicate, reason and interact with others.
What are the signs of autism?
Parents, teachers and medical professionals may look for these behaviors.
- not responding to name;
- doesn't point or wave goodbye;
- used to say a few words, but now doesn't;
- intense tantrums;
- odd movement (twirling, flapping, rocking);
- poor eye contact;
- unusual attachment to objects or schedules;
- lining up items in a certain order.
Note: having one or more of these signs does not mean that a child has autism.
When should a child be evaluated for autism?
Most pediatricians perform a developmental screening at well-child visits during the preschool years. These screenings allow the doctor to monitor the child’s development and to look for any red flags. If the doctor has reason for concern, he/she will refer the family to a specialist for an evaluation.
